BLM: We Stand in Solidarity
From The American Medical Student Association at The University of Maryland, College Park:
In recognition of the countless lives lost due to systemic racial oppression, The American Medical Student Association at The University of Maryland, College Park (UMD AMSA) would like to declare our solidarity with The Black Lives Matter Movement (BLM). As a healthcare-focused organization, our mission has and always will be focused on serving and supporting the community, regardless of race, ethnicity, background, gender, or other identifying factors. For that reason, we cannot remain silent as the actions of white supremacists and brutal policemen continue to claim the lives of innocent men, women, and folx like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other marginalized individuals. We firmly believe that it would be a disservice to our members and our communities if we fail to acknowledge the disparate treatment of black and brown communities in the U.S.
Endemic and structural racism has and still pervades the institutional bodies that govern us. It is reflected in the disproportionate killings and jailing of black and brown individuals by police and law officials; the racial health disparities, inequalities, and inequities; and the racial discrepancies noted in other areas like education, workforce, etc.
As a response to these racial injustices, UMD AMSA has committed to donating to The Lake Street Council 501(c)3. The Lake Street Council 501(c)3 is a non-profit organization that is focused on rebuilding Lake Street, Minneapolis, and supporting small businesses and non-profits. Though the efforts of our members, UMD AMSA was able to donate $330 dollars to the organization. We are so grateful to our members for recognizing the importance of speaking out and taking action.
We implore you all to not stop here. To combat racial injustices, we ask you all to engage in productive dialogues with your peers and community members and to continue supporting the cause in other ways.
Support, donate, vote, protest, educate! Play an active role in furthering the movement.
Sincerely,
UMD AMSA Executive Board
